UNICEF in America witnesses two phases - One is a positive fund raising activity in North America and the other is the negative plight of the Caribbean and Latin America.
In Latin America and Caribbean, more than 40% of the population is under the age of 18. Out of these, more than half live below poverty line. The UNICEF works on the six main issues engulfing this region.
1. The majority of these poor kids are below the age of 12. This is all the more concerning because they have greater danger of being subject to cruelties of the society. They can be easily manipulated to doing anything.
2. Children who are not of American origin or who are with disabilities, suffer all the more. Apart from poverty they also have to face discrimination.
3. Many of these kids suffer from Chronic Malnutrition, a form of malnutrition where the supply of nutrients in the early age was so less that there is no hope of recovery even after receiving adequate nutrition.
4. Violence, at home or in the neighborhood, affects more than 6 million kids out of which nearly 900,000 fall prey to it.
5. The number of adolescent females getting affected by HIV is increasing to alarming numbers.
6. Even nature is not supporting these children. Every year some or the other country gets affected due to some natural disaster. And if not natural disaster then some kind of national emergency snatches away lives of innocent kids.
North America with many other developed countries takes active participation in the humanitarian efforts of the UNICEF. United States and Canada have raised a lot of funding during every catastrophe in the American region. They majorly contribute to other needy nations as well. Canada has ratified the Convention of the rights of Child. US still have not ratified the Convention. But it still plays a major role in the betterment of kids around the globe. The US fund for the UNICEF was established in 1947 and till now, they have raised more than $1.3 billion help.
