Australia had ratified the UN Convention on the rights of the Child (CROC) way back in 1990. This clearly specifies that the Australian government made this move to make sure that every single child in Australia will have every right conveyed by the Convention. The government is abide to regularly report to an independent panel of experts, to explain them about the progress that is made towards ensuring the children’s right.
The State and territory governments offer a wide range of services specifically pointed towards children. These services range from health services and projects that will increase the community participation of children. Every state and territory has provided a governmental office which coordinates the government policies related to children. New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania are the three states that have established different agencies to advice and review on children issues.
The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 is strictly against any discrimination by any educational management on the base of any disability. This act specially deals with discrimination regarding the issues of admission and harassment. Criminal action is governed for offences against children under federal or state and territory law. Under this law, trafficking, sexual servitude and slavery of children is considered unlawful. The children’s right and their right to participation in decisions have been specifically added into the legislation. These laws are incorporated in the Child Protection Act 1999 making sure that the children are protected. There are various NGOs working for children rights in Australia and Save the Children Australia is one of them.
The National Children’s and Youth Law Centre and UNICEF Australia have combined the child rights taskforce. This is an alliance of national organizations that are working for the development of child rights which is responsible for the presentation and preparation of the NGO’s reports. This report is given to the UN Child right Committee regarding Australia’s implementation of the CRC.
The children in Australia has the right to access health through the universal health insurance program which is a strong step to encourage children to seek medical care.
