Attitude towards children has undergone a dramatic change in Europe and awareness has developed regarding the needs of children plus the special protection that is required. It also shows a concern that children are legal subjects and are holders of rights. This was the beginning when Europe decided to have a strong hand for safeguarding the rights of children.
European Convention for Children’s Rights
Initiative Taken by Europe for Child Right
The commitment of European institutions and Member Nations in implementing children’s policy is strengthening in the recent years. From the Europe side, the existing legal departments are being developed to execute programs and policies, particularly in areas related to social exclusion, child protection, discrimination against children and child poverty. The European Charter of Fundamental Rights has adopted the Article 24 which exclusively addresses the topics on children rights. The EU heads of State has several policies which has a clear relation to children. EURONET laid down a report with a clear vision of safeguarding children’s rights policy at European level which is underpinned by UNCRC.
NGO – CRIN
The idea for Child Right Information System (CRIN) was developed in the year 1991. It started when the experts started questioning about the disseminating and storing the information created through reports provided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The experts were related to organizations like UNICEF New York, Save the Children in Sweden, and Defense for Children International (DCI). This NGO group which works for the Convention on the Rights of the Child is a combination of NGO’s and works together for implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. CRIN was brought into effect in the year 1995.
