The commitment of European institutions and Member Nations in implementing children’s policy is strengthening in the recent years. From the Europe side, the existing legal departments are being developed to execute programs and policies, particularly in areas related to social exclusion, child protection, discrimination against children and child poverty. The European Charter of Fundamental Rights has adopted the Article 24 which exclusively addresses the topics on children rights. The EU heads of State has several policies which has a clear relation to children. EURONET laid down a report with a clear vision of safeguarding children’s rights policy at European level which is underpinned by UNCRC.
European conference was held for the rights of the child which got a great response. It particularly aimed at creating a common strategy for the coming years. Sweden had organized this conference on the rights of children which was attended by Her Majesty Queen Silvia; Minister for justice, Secretary General and others included head of Committees in Europe. Sweden Wanted to intensify the process on children’s right with combining 47 member states and put forward a strategy named “Protection, provision and participation for children in Europe". The proposal also included the implementation of Council of Europe Convention of 2007 on the sexual exploitation of the children in Europe.
The primary responsibilities of addressing the issues faced by children in Europe are rested with the Member States at the national level. This is the reason why EURONET believes that a coherent approach to the European children rights must be recognized and developed. This would help Europe in implementing the principles of the UNRC. The principles like Article 2, Article 3 and Article 12 which relates to non discrimination, best interests of the child and the children’s right to be heard in decision making respectively.
A comprehensive policy is being adopted that will improve the analysis and data collection of the social change on the children in Europe. This policy will undoubtedly strengthen the role of NGOs working for child rights in Europe and will also ensure that children in Europe are provided every right as well as protection.
